Start / Run a Business

The process below explains how to register a new business to receive required licenses and tax permits.

What does the Department of Taxation require of new businesses?

Step 1: Apply for a Federal Identification Number (FEIN# or EIN)

  • What is it?: A Federal Identification Number, also called an Employer Identification Number (EIN or FEIN), is issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to identify a business entity.
  • Apply for a FEIN on the IRS website.

Step 2: Apply for a Business License

  • Every retailer selling tangible personal property that will be stored, used, or consumed in Nevada must have a Business License (NRS 372.220).
  • Note: You must have a FEIN# or EIN first before applying for a business license. See step 1 above.
  • Apply Online: Get a Business License ID# online with Nevada SilverFlume (Secretary of State).

Step 3: Apply for Required Tax Permits

  • Every retailer selling tangible personal property that will be stored, used, or consumed in Nevada must have a Sales/Use Tax Permit (Retailers) or a Consumer Use Tax Permit (Non-Retailers) (NRS 372.220).
  • Note: You must have a Business License first before registering for a tax permit. See step 2 above.
  • Apply Online at Nevada Tax Center.
    • When applying online, you will receive the permit ID# within 24 hours.
  • Apply by Mail: Alternatively, download and complete the Nevada Business Registration Form.

    • Mail to:
      Department of Taxation
      3850 Arrowhead Dr., 2nd Floor
      Carson City, NV 89706
    • Note: If you do not have a location in Nevada but are registering with the Department, please enter your out-of-state Business Name on line 8, ‘Nevada Name (DBA)’ and your Business Location on line 10, ‘Location of Nevada Business Operations’.

    • Note: Please allow several weeks for the permit ID# when using this form, or longer if payment is not received at the same time as the form.

Special Tax Cases

Please contact the Department by phone at (866) 962-3707 for additional registration, taxes and license information if you:

  • Are a financial institution.
  • Buy/sell alcohol or tobacco.

  • Operate a facility at which exhibitions are held.
  • Sell tires at retail.
  • Rent out vehicles for short periods (less than 30 days).
  • If you provide insurance services, you should contact the Department of Insurance

Unemployment Insurance

  • Contact the Nevada Department of Employment, Training & Rehabilitation (DETR) to find out if you need to register for Unemployment Insurance (UI) for your business.
  • Nevada Statute (NRS 363A & B) requires that all Nevada employers pay a Modified Business Tax (MBT) on their gross total payroll. MBT applies to the wages of employees in Nevada for whom the employer must pay Nevada Unemployment Insurance.
  • When you register with DETR, you’ll automatically be registered for the MBT. There might be other registration requirements for your type of business as well.
